‘Standing On His Promises’
So Timothy, my son, I am entrusting you with this responsibility, in keeping with the very first prophecies that were spoken over your life, and are now in the process of fulfillment in this great work of ministry, in keeping with the prophecies spoken over you. With this encouragement use your prophecies as weapons as you wage spiritual warfare by faith and with a clean conscience. For there are many who reject these virtues and are now destitute of the true faith.
– 1 Timothy 1:18-19 TPT –
I believe it’s safe to say that many, if not all of us, have had seasons where it seemed like the light at the end of the tunnel felt further away than ever. Perhaps you’ve battled thoughts that the promises of God couldn’t possibly be any further away, or maybe they’re just forgotten. Many of us are familiar with phrases like “it’s the darkest before the dawn.” However, in times like these, it’s important to remember that it often feels the most desperate right before the breakthrough hour. In these times and seasons, we must encourage ourselves in the Lord, in His Word, His eternal truths, and His promises—both in His written Word and His spoken words to us. We must hide ourselves in Him and inquire of Him.
Consider King David at the battle of Ziklag and his response in the face of adversity, and well, things not going as they were prophesied or pictured by either him or God. This couldn’t have been what David pictured when he was chosen by God years ago. David had been anointed as king privately; this was the Lord’s will, and He sent the Prophet Samuel to deliver the word. But David had found himself in quite a “desert” season, where the circumstances definitely did not add up to the word of the Lord. He was hated and hunted by the current king, Saul. Two of his wives, along with all the children and the wives of his men, were taken into captivity, and the men who were once loyal to him, all of a sudden, sought to kill him. This definitely qualified as a rough day at the office! However, it says in 1 Samuel 30 that David strengthened himself in the Lord his God and inquired of the Lord.
Though David grieved as his men grieved, his feelings of grief and sorrow did not overcome him—he pulled away from it all. He sought after God’s presence, which brought him comfort, strength, and encouragement in the trial. Then he inquired of the Lord and listened for the word of the Lord.
As a result, David received clear directions from the Lord. He was to pursue the enemy, overtake him, recover all, and furthermore, receive an abundance of plunder. This is such a beautiful picture of our amazing, loving God. He encourages us in the trial and equips us to win! We only need to run into Him with faith that knows and believes He is for us and with us, and with a holy trust that is rooted in Him, knowing that He is not a man that He should lie (Numbers 23:19).
In the same manner, Paul the Apostle encouraged Timothy, His son in the faith, to take the prophecies released over his life and use them as weapons of warfare. This action, prayer, and positioning in the spirit will keep our souls shielded in the Word and promises of God. It will leave no room in our hearts and minds for the enemy to throw us off of God’s Word or shipwreck our faith.
David’s response at Ziklag highlights several key principles for standing on the promises of God. Let’s take a look.
Faith
David kept his faith in God’s words over his life. He wasn’t king yet, so he knew the story wasn’t over. David’s gift of faith was large because he knew who his God was. It was that same bold faith that fueled his righteous confrontation with Goliath.
And without faith living within us it would be impossible to please God. For we come to God in faith knowing that he is real and that he rewards the faith of those who passionately seek him.
—Hebrews 11:6
Believe
David did not submit himself to accusation from the enemy or his men. He only believed the word of the Lord. It is essential that we guard our hearts and minds—only giving room to God’s eternal truth and His words of promise, so that temporal facts do not sway us.
But Jesus refused to listen to what they were told and said to the Jewish official, “Don’t yield to fear. All you need to do is to keep on believing.”
—Mark 5:36
Obedience
David moved in obedience to the word he received from the Lord. It is crucial that when He gives directions, we follow them, exactly how He has instructed us, to the best of our ability. It is for our benefit that He gives us instructions. Let us obey them.
If you have a willing heart to let me help you, and if you will obey me, you will feast on the blessings of an abundant harvest.
—Isaiah 1:19
Have you felt overwhelmed this season, or disheartened over the lack of fruit in the things you’ve contended and prayed for? Are there unfulfilled dreams or words of prophecy from the Lord that have yet to blossom and yield fruit? I know for many, this season has been difficult for multiple reasons. I want to encourage and remind you, do not let your disappointment or sorrow keep you from contending, claiming, and possessing the promises that are already yours! According to His Word in 2 Corinthians 1:20, all of His promises are “YES” and “Amen”; His Word is true and will be fulfilled.
As we reflect on the truth of His promises and the principles He has shown us, I want to leave you with these declarations and prayers:
I call for righteous faith to stir up in you now, to see the Maker of Heaven and Earth fight on your behalf! I decree a Christ-filled confidence fills your heart, soul, and mind, rendering them unable to partner with the torment from the enemy over the fulfillment of God’s words. Instead, your heart, soul, and mind will be a place where the mind of Christ resides with great hope, faith, trust, and belief in God and His Word.
In Jesus’ Name, I declare that your faith is full, and it is fueled from the heart of God. I decree, according to Mark 5:36, that epic and holy belief will anchor you to the reality of heaven, and His promises will fully manifest in and through you!
I pray Isaiah 1:19 over you–your heart will bow in willingness and humility toward King Jesus. You will walk in perfect submission and obedience, causing an abundant harvest of blessings and promises to break forth into your night. There will be an explosion of breakthrough into His glorious dawn of promises made manifest in and through you, in Jesus’ mighty name!

The Power Of The Decree – Book by Patricia King
The spiritual exercise of making decrees finds its precedent in both Old and New Testaments – the practice of simply quoting God’s promises back to Him, “reminding” Him of what He has said. This kind of prayer is one of the most vital forms of intercession. In fact, the practice of decreeing God’s Word not only builds our faith but transforms our lives.
In this powerful and enlightening book, bestselling author Patricia King helps you grasp the significant impact of inspired and finely tuned prayer. Patricia explains how to
- Find specific promises in Scripture for your need-
- Counter problems with God’s Word
- Speak the truth of Scripture with confidence
- Understand the difference between confessing the Word, proclaiming the Word and decreeing the Word
