“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” — Romans 8:28
Have you ever had a season of life that just didn’t go the way you thought it would? Maybe you stepped out in faith, obeyed what God was asking you to do, prayed the prayers, made the plans, and believed you had a pretty clear picture of what the next chapter would look like.
The door you thought would open stayed closed. The timeline stretched further than you expected. The outcome looked completely different than what you were believing for. And then everything shifted.
If we’re honest, those moments hit us hard. Not just because the circumstances changed, but because somewhere along the way we started to assume that if God was leading, everything would unfold exactly how we pictured it.
But one of the most consistent things Scripture shows us is this: A change of plans does not mean an absence of purpose. Let’s look at Joseph as an example.
As a young man, Joseph received a dream from God. A glimpse of destiny, purpose, and promise. But the path that followed probably looked nothing like anything he imagined. The road to the palace went through betrayal, a pit, slavery, false accusations, and a prison cell.
If Joseph had measured God’s faithfulness only by what he could see in front of him, he would have had every reason to believe he’d been forgotten.
But Heaven was working even when Joseph couldn’t see it. The pit wasn’t the end of the promise. The prison wasn’t the death of the dream. The delay wasn’t God saying no.
God was positioning Joseph for something bigger than Joseph could have engineered himself.
In Genesis 50:20, Joseph looks back over everything he went through and says, ”You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”
Notice he didn’t say everything that happened was good. The betrayal wasn’t good. The false accusations weren’t good. The years in prison weren’t good. But God is powerful enough to step into what wasn’t good and pull good out of it anyway.
We get discouraged when we’re staring at one unfinished chapter but God is already looking at the whole story.
The disciples experienced this too.
When Jesus went to the cross, it looked like total collapse. The One they had left everything to follow was crucified. Every expectation they had shattered in a single afternoon.
But what looked like the greatest defeat in history became the greatest victory in eternity.
The cross wasn’t an interruption to God’s plan. It was the plan.
Maybe today you’re standing somewhere that looks nothing like what you expected. Maybe you’re asking why something ended, why something changed, or why the journey feels different than you imagined.
Don’t lose heart.
God doesn’t need perfect circumstances to fulfill His promises.
He’s not intimidated by delays. He’s not limited by closed doors. He doesn’t get confused when things suddenly shift.
Proverbs 3:5-6 says it plainly, ”Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
Sometimes trust looks like worshiping before you understand.
Sometimes faith looks like taking the next step before the whole road is visible. Let go of the pressure to have everything figured out. Your Father is faithful. He always has been. The same God who was with Joseph in the pit, with Daniel in the lion’s den, and with the disciples after the cross is with you right now.
Your unexpected season may turn out to be the very place where you encounter God’s unexpected goodness.
Prayer:
Father, today I surrender my plans, my timelines, and my expectations to You. Help me trust You when life looks different than I imagined. Give me eyes to see where You are working, even when I don’t understand. I believe You are faithful, You are good, and You are writing a greater story than I could ever write on my own. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Activation:
Take a moment today and ask the Lord:
“Father, where have I called something a disappointment that You are actually using for my good?”
Write down what He shows you, and thank Him for His faithfulness in every season.
