“But Peter said, ‘Man, I do not know what you are saying!’
Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.
And the Lord turned and looked at Peter.”
– Luke 22:60-61 –
Even in the times when we are at our weakest and worst, the Lord wants us to know that He loves us and is there for us. When we are at our most broken and in the midst of our greatest failures, God’s love for us does not change. His desire is to meet us in those moments, lift us up, and help us move beyond our shortcomings into greater wholeness through a greater revelation of His love.
In Luke 22:60, we see Peter at his lowest moment, in the midst of his greatest failing. He has given into fear and denied Jesus three times, exactly as the Lord told him he would (see Luke 22:31-34). At that very moment, scripture says that Jesus “turned and looked at Peter.”
I don’t believe Jesus turned His face to Peter with a look of hurt or surprise or disdain or disappointment. I don’t believe Jesus gazed upon Peter with a look that said, “Seriously?! After all I have done for you? You couldn’t stand with Me? You couldn’t stick up for Me? You deny Me?!” No. I believe that Jesus turned His face to Peter in that moment to let His friend know that He was right there with him, that He loved him no matter what, that His love for Peter had not and would not ever change.
This is powerful, but it is has even more impact when we look at it in relation to the Old Testament. In Numbers 6 the Lord outlines the Nazirite vow, inviting His people to set themselves apart from the world and walk with Him in a special and committed way. In this context of the people being fully committed to Him, the Lord tells Moses to have the high priest pronounce His greatest blessing over the Israelites – that He will turn His face to them, and shine His countenance upon them.
In the glorious moment of Luke 22:61, when Peter has just denied Jesus three times, what does the Lord do? He turns His face to Peter! He shines His countenance upon him! Jesus releases the great blessing of Numbers 6:24-26 to Peter even though he has just failed miserably at being fully committed to the Lord.
This is the good news of the Gospel of Jesus Christ! His love for us, and His blessings to us, are not based on how well we perform. They are not earned. They are freely, generously and continually given by Him. No matter what. All the time.
Even in our worst moments and greatest failings, the Lord wants us to know that He loves us and is there for us. At our most broken, all God wants is for us to turn toward Him so that we will realize He never turns away from us.
God’s love and blessings are not based on what you do, they are based on who He is!
Make these simple but powerful decrees over yourself each day this month:
- The Lord loves me, and pours out His blessings upon me.
- The Lord never turns from me.
- The Lord makes His face to shine upon me.
- In this moment I choose to turn fully to Him.
- I am loved and accepted.
- By faith I receive all that He has for me.
- From this day on, I am fully rooted in God’s love and more empowered to live in His righteousness.
