In late December of 2023, when I was seeking the Lord for what His intentions are for the coming year, one of the things I heard Him clearly speak was that there will be a great “falling away” in 2024.
I have to admit, I wasn’t all that surprised or taken aback by this word. I had been feeling for weeks that there was an increase of turbulence, warfare, and even exposure coming to the world and the church in 2024. Often in those times, what the enemy wants, as much as anything, is for faith to be turned away and hope lost amidst the heartbreak, confusion, frustration, and disappointment of it all.
But what took me by surprise when the Lord spoke about this coming “falling away” was I did not feel heartbreak or disappointment; I actually felt anticipation and even excitement. That was when the Lord took me deeper into the word and said to share this with His people:
“Your hunger for more will connect you to a grace for a great ‘falling away’ in 2024. Not a falling away from the faith, but in your faith you will see a great falling away of those things that have been limiting you. Negative emotions, consistent distractions, patterns of procrastination, and even some past-due relationships will begin to fall away.”
A REBUILD and REMODEL of His Church
As I lingered with Him in this word, He showed me that He is getting ready to do a “strip-down” rebuild and remodel of His church. Especially among His hungry ones who are ready for the “more!”
2024 will be a year when Holy Spirit invites us to allow Him to highlight things that need to go. This will be a John 15 pruning. And for those who allow the process, it will bring forth increase and multiplication.
I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit.
— John 15:1-2
Part of this “pruning” process will be allowing (and even inviting) Holy Spirit to help us see things that have been subtly hindering and limiting us. Most of these things are not big sin, per se, but are simply bad or unfruitful habits that we have taken on or picked back up (especially since the pandemic and the time of lockdowns).
The Lord said that He will also help many get past weariness and wariness (a lack of energy and a lack of trust), as well as negative emotions and fruit-stealing distractions.
Don’t Get Tricked Into Releasing More Darkness
The Lord did mention two very specific areas of fruit-stealing distractions where He wanted bring freedom.
The first was “conspiracy theory rabbit holes.”
I am very aware that there are very real conspiracies out there. But He helped me see that there is a big difference between being aware of the darkness so that we can be effective in dealing with it (see Isaiah 60:2-3), versus getting sucked down into time-stealing rabbit holes of ever-deepening conspiracy theories that get us wound up and overflowing with frustration and irritation as opposed to power and authority.
The second fruit-stealing distraction was what He referred to as “online chat groups” (this included things like comment chains and message boards on social media, YouTube, and other online news and streaming sites). These types of comment threads tend to be rife with dishonor, accusation, irritation, bitterness, anger, and a lot of the other negative emotions He wants free us from in 2024. Avoiding a daily dose of all that negativity will be a big step in the right direction of allowing Holy Spirit to deal with what has been limiting us.
We must stand for righteousness in 2024. But it is important that we do it in the character and nature of the Righteous One. Otherwise, we can very quickly use being “right” as an excuse not to behave righteously. And then we end up simply releasing more darkness, instead of moving in power by partnering with the fullness of Him who is LIGHT!
When there was nothing but darkness and chaos in Genesis 1, the Lord did not complain about the darkness or curse the darkness. He released light (see Genesis 1:3). And that shifted everything.
In 2024, the Lord wants to ramp up His power in all those who are hungry to move in more impact and effectiveness. Part of the process on the way to that promise will be the “great falling away” of things that we have allowed to hinder and limit us in years past.
Pray this with me:
Holy Spirit, thank You that You have brought me to this moment. I invite You to search my ways and my days, my thoughts and my emotions, my heart and my mind. Highlight to me any bad habits, negative emotions, consistent distractions, fruit-stealing patterns, or anything else that I have allowed to limit me in any way. I give You permission to reveal it all. I ask for Your great grace to help me allow the falling away and pruning of those things so I can be even more fruitful and effective for the Kingdom of God here on earth in 2024, and for all my days to come!
