First Fruits for 2025

By Patricia King

“Honor the Lord with your possessions, and with the first fruits of all your increase; so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.”
— Proverbs 3:9-10

As I prepared for 2025, I greeted the new year with a first-fruits offering to the Lord. This act of faith, love, and honor comes with a specific promise:

“So your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.”

In this devotion, I’ve prepared a teaching that I believe will inspire you. I encourage you to pray about offering the Lord a first-fruits gift at the start of this year. This offering promises great blessings of increase for the year ahead. I believe 2025 holds the potential to be your greatest year of increase ever.

Consider giving the Lord the first day, first week, or first month of your income. Whatever you have faith for, take the leap and honor God, trusting Him to bless you abundantly. For example, if your monthly income is $1,000, divide it by 31 days—this equals approximately $32.25 for your first-fruits offering.

The first-fruits offering is distinct from your tithe. The tithe is a regular 10% of your income, honoring God for what He has already given. The first fruits, however, is a sacrificial act of faith for the blessings yet to come.

I pray this teaching strengthens your faith. Examine the Word, act on it, and receive His promises!

FIRST-FRUITS OFFERING

A first-fruits offering is an offering of the first portion of a harvest or crop, given to God as an expression of gratitude, faith, and acknowledgment of His provision. In the Bible, the subject of first fruits appears multiple times, particularly in the Old Testament, as a way to honor God and dedicate the first and best of one’s resources to Him. It is a symbolic act of trust, recognizing that everything belongs to God and that He is the ultimate source of all blessings.

Biblical Foundation:

1. Old Testament Command:
In the Old Testament, the Israelites were commanded to bring the first fruits of their crops to the Lord. This was part of the Mosaic Law and is found in several key passages:

    • Exodus 23:19: “The first of the first fruits of your land you shall bring into the house of the Lord your God.”
    • Leviticus 23:10-11: “When you come into the land which I give you and reap its harvest, then you shall bring a sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest to the priest. He shall wave the sheaf before the Lord, to be accepted on your behalf; on the day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it.”
    • Proverbs 3:9-10: “Honor the Lord with your possessions, and with the first fruits of all your increase; so your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine.”

The first-fruits offering was typically given during agricultural harvests, particularly the barley and wheat harvests, and later during the Feast of Weeks (Shavuot).

2. Symbolism of First Fruits:

    • Dedication to God: The first fruits were considered the best portion, symbolizing dedication of everything else that follows to God. It was a holy offering of consecration and represented the first and the best of what was to come. The act of giving the first fruits acknowledged God as the provider, benefactor, and sustainer of all things.
    • Faith and Trust: By giving the first portion of the harvest, the giver demonstrated faith that God would provide the rest of the harvest. It was an act of trust that God would continue to bless and provide, even when the full harvest had not yet been gathered.

3. New Testament Fulfillment:

    • The concept of first fruits is carried over into the New Testament with a deeper spiritual meaning. In 1 Corinthians 15:20, Paul refers to Jesus Christ as the “first fruits of those who have fallen asleep,” signifying that Christ’s resurrection was the first of many to come for all believers. Jesus’ resurrection is the ultimate first-fruits offering, guaranteeing the resurrection of those who are in Christ.
    • Romans 8:23 also speaks of believers being the “first fruits of the Spirit,” meaning that the Holy Spirit’s work in believers is a foretaste of the full redemption to come.

4. First Fruits in New Testament Giving: In modern Christian practice, the idea of a first-fruits offering can be applied to giving the first and best portion of one’s income to God. It’s an offering of gratitude and a sign of faith, trusting that God will provide for the remainder of one’s needs. Some churches encourage first-fruits offerings at the beginning of the year as a way of consecrating the year to God, dedicating the first part of the year, or the first paycheck, as an offering to Him.

Key Principles:

  • Honor and gratitude: It is an act of honoring God for His provision and expressing thankfulness for what He has given.
  • Faith: By giving the first portion, the giver demonstrates trust in God’s continued provision.
  • Blessing: The giving of the first fruits is often associated with God’s blessing. Proverbs 3:10 promises that honoring God with the first fruits will result in blessings—“your barns will be filled with plenty.”

Conclusion:

A first-fruits offering is a powerful biblical principle of honoring God with the best of what He provides, demonstrating faith, gratitude, and trust in His provision. It is a tangible way to acknowledge God as the source of all blessings and to dedicate our resources to Him. Whether through material harvests or financial giving, the spirit of the first-fruits offering remains a relevant act of worship today.
