Be strong and let your heart take courage, all you who hope in the LORD. – Psalm 31:24
We are facing challenging times, and many current situations can potentially invite reactions of fear and intimidation. Joshua was tempted by fear in his day when God asked him to lead the children of Israel into the Promised Land. They had faced many obstacles and hardships in the wilderness and their leader, Moses, was now dead. A great weight was on Joshua’s shoulders and he had to lead the nation in a way they had never been before. Look at what God said to Joshua in chapter 1, verses 6,7,9:
“Be strong and courageous, for you shall give this people possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give them.
“Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
The assignment God gave Joshua was greater than Joshua’s experience or human ability. That is why he needed courage.
Courage defined is the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. In short, courage is the ability to face difficulties and fears. It is not the absence of them.
It took great courage for Jesus to go to the cross. It took courage for Elijah to confront the prophets of Baal. It took courage for Paul to go into regions that were hostile to the gospel. It took courage for Esther to go before the King. All of these individuals faced difficult situations and overcame fear with an attribute of God called courage.
The God-given blessing of courage lives within you. When you feel intimidated, overwhelmed or fearful in life, you can draw on that courage and feel strength, confidence, and boldness rise within. This blessing of courage can be received by faith every time you need it.
My son was bullied in school when he was younger and desired to quit school as a result. We had a meeting with the counselor who shared with him about the power of courage: the ability to face his fears. He chose to go the way of an overcomer and gloriously overcame by praying for courage each day before he went to school. That year became the most character-building year of all. He finished strong and gained popularity that year.
Courage is a powerful attribute that you have in Christ. In these challenging times, remember to draw on God-given courage. Be courageous!
