“God is love.”
– 1 John 4:8 –
In his gospel and throughout his epistles, John often wrote about the love of God. But in 1 John 4:8, the Apostle of Love makes an even more powerful declaration than the truth that God loves us. He declares that God is love.
When we catch the subtle but powerful impact of this statement, it sets us free from ever having to wonder if God really does love us, or if we truly deserve to be so radically and perfectly loved by Him. When we understand what the Apostle John understood, we never worry again about having to earn God’s love, because the love of God simply is!
When we realize that God is love, we step into an unshakeable certainty that God loves us. Why? Because we realize that God does not choose to love us, He is love, so we never have to be concerned that He might choose not to love us. God cannot not love. He is love. So it is impossible for Him who is love to not love.
Do you see it? God loves you because He is love.
Love is not what God does. It is who He is. You cannot cause God to stop loving you because you cannot cause God to stop being God! Isn’t that glorious?!
Now let’s take this one step further. Why does God save? Because He loves – John 3:16 makes this clear. It is the same for all of God’s blessings and promises.
He saves because He loves.
He heals because He loves.
He delivers because He loves.
He provides because He loves.
He protects because He loves
He revives, renews, refreshes, and restores because He loves.
And He loves, not because He chooses to or we deserve it, but because He is love.
Just as we can be certain of God’s love in our lives, we can be certain of His healing, deliverance, provision, and all of His other blessings and benefits. Not because of who we are, or what we have done, or what we understand, or how much we read our Bible, or how often we pray. But because of who God is.
You are loved. And you can be certain of it. Because God is love.
Make these simple but powerful decrees over yourself each day this month:
- God is love.
- I am certain of His love for me, because love is not what God does, it is who He is.
- Him who is Love abides in me, and I abide in Him. I abide in love and love abides in me.
- God saved me because He loves me.
- God heals me because He loves me.
- God provides for me, protects me, revives, renews, refreshes and restores me … all because He loves me.
- This day and every day I am filled to overflowing, and surrounded overwhelmingly with the love of God!
